Based on an international symposium of the same title organized by the Islamic Environmental Design Research Centre (IEDRC) and the University of Rome, La Sapienza, Deportimento di Rappresentazione and held at Rome in June 1995 at the Egyptian Academy. This issue of the Journal of the IEDRC was sponsored by Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah.
