Wooden Box with Metal Lid

Description

This rosewood box with metal top of etched nickel-plated brass. Made exclusively for GMCC in India. Inspired by LNS 1097 C, an unglazed earthenware tile with ‘interlaced’ veined strapwork outlining an infinite pattern of ten- and five-pointed stars (lozenge plan of repetition, based on decagons tangent at their apexes); the six-sided bilaterally symmetrical polygons with palmettes, and the centers of the ten-pointed stars with ten-petalled rosettes.
Probably East Iranian World, late 12th – early 13th century
Moulded, with engraved grooves in the middle of the ’straps’
